Pitlochry, the holiday train

The Pitlochry Station opened in 1863, at the height of the construction of railway lines. With its two fireplaces and wooden panels, I find that the station has retained its Victorian splendour.

Queen Victoria came to Pitlochry several times. This started the fashion of stays in the countryside, far from the big industrial cities. These day trips to Pitlochry were particularly popular in the early 20^th century. Travelers arrived from Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Today, tourists still come to walk along the Tummel River or in the forests of Perthshire, but they rather take their car. I took the train from Edinburgh. In summer, during the day, there are trains almost every hour.

I think the train is a fantastic means of transportation. Especially in Scotland. Trains often go through breath-taking landscapes. And compared to the car, if you are visitors, you do not have to concentrate on the road and on driving on the right side!
