I can not go to Arbroath without a trip to Stuart’s Fresh Fish. Located close to the port, the shop is known for its smokie, prepared in a traditional way.
Arbroath smokie is a haddock, salted, then slowly smoked over a wood fire. The same technique has been used for at least 600 years. It was at Auchmithie, 5 km from Arbroath, that the smokie was originally prepared. It is believed that this hot-smoked fish was imported during northern invasions 1000 years ago.
In the 18th century, fishermen from Auchmithie settled in Arbroath, with their know-how and traditions. Since then, this smokie is known as Arbroath smokie.
I love to eat it while it’s still hot. Its white flesh has a taste of fresh fish, with a little smoky note and a hint of salt. Sat on a bench, in the heart of the small port of Arbroath, the picture is perfect!
