In St Andrews, the « Old Course » is a legendary course. It’s been 600 years since golf has been practiced there. Long before Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the city’s university, golf was students’ favourite pastime.
It may seem surprising, but in theory everyone can play on the « Old Course ». No need to be a member of a club. However, you must be a confirmed golfer, be willing to pay £ 330 in high season and most of all be lucky! To play, you have to literally win the lottery.
Given the popularity of the « Old Course », applications must be made months in advance. A draw is then organised. If you are not into planning, you can also try your luck on the spot. That’s what I did. Saturday is planned for that. Two days before the weekend, seats are awarded among those who submitted a ballot directly to St Andrews.
And if it does not work, you can, like me, play on other courses on the seaside. It is less prestigious than the « Old Course », but just as pretty and much cheaper.
