« Neuk » is an old Scottish word that means « corner ». The East Neuk is a particularly pleasant corner to discover! Along the coast, fishing villages follow one another, built in the hollow of natural harbours.
Crail is one of those villages. In my opinion, it’s the most beautiful. At one time, Crail was the most important port of East Neuk. It exported fish, salt and wool to continental Europe.
Today, the port is much more peaceful. But the fishermen are still active. In the summer, fresh lobsters can be enjoyed right on the harbour. At Reilly shellfish, lobsters are cooked on the spot. They’re eaten sitting on a port bench, it is a real delight.
Be careful however, the service is dependent on the fishing conditions. Not to be disappointed, I advise you to check if the fishing was good before going! Note that Reilly shellfish is closed on Mondays.
