When tourists arrive in Scotland, they are surprised by the accent. It is often very different from the one learnt at school in English class! It is also wrong to speak of Scottish accent. There are more than one. We do not speak in Glasgow as we speak in Edinburgh or Inverness.
In addition to the accent, you must also learn a different vocabulary. It is very visible on this small panel! In Scotland, we talk about “dugs” and not “dogs”. Neither do we use the word “little” or “tiny” to say small. We say “wee” . If we add to that that Scots tend to roll the “r”, it can complicate the situation!
Understanding a Scotsman can require a little concentration. But if the person you are talking to sees that you have difficulties, they will take the time to repeat. After a few days listening to Scots, you will begin to get used to it. I promise!
