gairloch scotland roadtrip siredwards

At first glance, I wondered what a fishing boat was doing on Loch Gairloch, especially since it’s registered in Ullapool, the big nearby fishing port. I looked at a map and saw Loch Gairloch is actually a sea loch. There are many in the area.

It communicates directly with The Minch, the sea channel that separates the Highlands from the Outer Hebrides archipelago. Beyond, it’s the Atlantic Ocean!

Several boats are moored at the port, waiting for another working day. The clouds that obscure the horizon should not make you want to leave again soon! Despite the cold, the boat’s yellow hull warms up the eyes.

I will do as the locals and the fishermen do: push the door into the old inn and eat a good haggis (stuffed ewes’ belly), before setting off again on the roads of Scotland.
