Next to Inverness, Fort George is an imposing military fortress, which is mainly open to the public, but a garrison is still stationed there.
At the time of its construction, Fort George was built to impress. And it still works! It was built in the 18th century, to pacify the region after the Jacobite revolts. Its walls are star-shaped, to be able to monitor all sides.
For me, Fort George is a bit of a sleeping giant, a memory of the past. Moreover, in a few years’ time, the military will leave the fort. The defence minister explained, with a note of humour, that the regional rebellions could be considered over.
