When I discuss the Highland Games with friends, they often tell me about tug-of-war or trunk throwing. They’re part of these games’ events, but there are many more!

Running is a classic. At Strathmore Highland Games, the athletes compete on 90, 200, 800 or even 3200 metres. There are also relay races.

Before starting, the runners arrive a long time in advance. For long minutes, I saw them stretch and especially warm up their ankles. The race takes place on turf that is perfectly trimmed, but less stable than an athletic track.

Despite the mandatory spike shoes, it is also more difficult to find support. Each runner is there to surpass themself, under the watchful eye of an audience of connoisseurs. I was part of them!
