At the scale of the Isle of Skye, Portree is a « big city ». It has about 4000 inhabitants (40% of the islanders). It is therefore often where tourists are lodged. I myself chose to sleep in Portree.
It must be said that it is an excellent starting point for exploring the rest of the island. Portree has the great advantage of being central. From the centre, I’m a 15-minute drive to Old Man of Storr and 45 minutes to the start of the Quiraing hike.
The city is convenient, but also charming. The port is particularly colourful, with its row of houses painted in several colours. The village is also lively, with restaurants and pubs. And on rainy days, I can always take refuge in Aros Centre. This small cultural centre shows films and hosts concerts.
