Each remains frozen, waiting to see what the other will do. I try one step forward and the deer backs three. Its companion is more fearful and disappears behind the trees.
It stays for a few more seconds. It stares at me, it sniffs the air, before leaving with agility. The deer is really the king of the Highlands. It is the largest wild mammal in Scotland. This one is a red deer, which lives in the hills and the mountains.
It is not uncommon to see deers in Scotland. They often move in groups of about ten individuals. But they tend to stay away. I was lucky to see one so close here. And it seemed as curious as I was !
