In 1263 in Largs, the Scots and Vikings fought a great battle. It was the last of this kind on Scottish ground. From what I’ve seen, the people of Largs have never forgotten about it. They keep commemorating it!
First, there is this metal Viking who proudly poses on the beach of Largs. Also, every summer, there is a large Viking festival: a village is recreated and you can talk with « real Vikings » of the 13th century.
When we think of the Vikings, we often imagine bloodthirsty warriors. But, I was told they also made a lot of Scottish culture. The « kilt » for example, the ultimate Scottish word, has in fact Scandinavian origins!
