Stornoway is the largest city on the Isle of Lewis. For many tourists, this port is the first contact with the Outer Hebrides archipelago. The Loch Seaforth boat travels back and forth between Ullapool on the west coast of Scotland and Stornoway. The crossing lasts 2h30. It’s a bit long but I think it’s the most pleasant way to travel!
At one time, there were talks of building an underwater tunnelbetween the Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Skye or Ullapool. The project never saw the light of day but I think about it whenever the weather is bad.
In Summer it’s fine, but severe winter storms result in ferry cancellations. In these cases, you have to wait until the waves calm down so that the ferries can leave again. This requires taking your time and accepting that nature is the strongest. It’s always good to remember it!
