While on the beach of Uig, I crossed this accordion player, made of odds and ends. He was seated in the company of a paper singer and a bagpipe ringer of whom only the hands and the instrument remain.
I wonder what they are doing there? Maybe they were announcing a music festival? The only sign is « Ceòl Mòr » written on the accordion. It’s Gaelic and it means « great music ».
Gaelic is part of the identity of the Outer Hebrides archipelago. Here, more than 50% of the inhabitants speak this Celtic language, in addition to English. That’s why I do not always understand them, especially if they talk to each other!
To prepare my stay on Lewis and Harris, I learned two expressions: « Halò » for hello and « Mar sin leat » for goodbye. Now I can also say « great music ». It’s a start!
