Highlands Games, with the strength of the calves!

The Highlands Games are the famous games that celebrate the traditions of Scotland. These sporty and artistic events also host cycling races. But with some special rules.

Looking closely at the bikes, I saw they did not have derails. The handlebars don’t have any brakes either. The competitors really are on an equal footing. They are judged on their endurance and pure strength.

At the Highland Games, my favourite bike race is ‘De’il tak the hindmost’, which means ‘the devil takes the one at the back’. After each lap the last of the race is eliminated. It’s really spectacular!
