lewis-and-harris-and-the-convenience-store-sir-edwards-roadtrip

The name is a little misleading but Lewis and Harris are actually a single island. Lewis is to the north, while Harris is to the south. The two parts of the island are very different: the north is rather flat while the south is very hilly. Their common point is to be uninhabited!

On Lewis and Harris, there are fewer than 10 people per square kilometre. Outside Stornoway (Lewis) and Tarbert (Harris), you can walk for dozens of kilometres crossing only sheep and some hamlets. The islanders have adapted. On my way, I cross small huts marked « free-range chicken eggs ».

They are self-service eggs. On an island like this, people live with trust. Just put £2 in the piggy bank and leave with six fresh eggs. It is convenient! That’s enough to make a nice omelette. Tomorrow, I’ll just have to think about bringing back the box.
